On Halloween

October the round month of skulls and pumpkins
wide round eyes gazing at decorated shops and houses
some scarier than others
lips pursed in an “o” like the lower case A
of anticipation with its tail cut off by the farmer’s wife

Sweet month
a trembling of change
night sweeps in unhindered as a rogue wave

This month, we carve them
Next, we bake them
into another round, lined with pastry
sweet as a table where gratitude
joins hands and feasts together

October almost over
with good things on the way

Happy Halloween! Thank you for reading
