same old newness
same new oldness
all my self portraits are younger than my present
even the newest one, made only yesterday

this moment is a new one
this day is new and also old:
the man of winter
with his long white beard
looks in the mirror
and sees in himself a little baby

I look and I see
more than my present self:
both new and old,
and the faces of others
who look through my eyes into a time
they couldn’t stay to see
looking from where they now reside
refreshed, gleaming,
made brand new

Happy New Year, reader friends! I wrote this poem on New Year’s Eve but it took me a little time to share it. I hope the year is off to a good start for all of you!
