Nantucket
here flowers bloom
on the dunes
purple and white
in the streets there
are other blooms
flowers that open
when the women
emerge, dressed
for dinner
striding with wide
smiles in a mist
of hairspray
and salt rose perfume
by the bay lights go on
tallow candles illuminating the
twilight rolling grasses
that gather beside the beach
where purple and white open
and close with the tide of hours
offering a sweet repast all their own
I went to visit my daughter in Nantucket for a few days in July. It was a huge experience for me! I made a ton of photographs, and wrote a slew of poems. This is the first one, with a phone photo I made on the my first evening there when we were wandering the dunes after dinner at a restaurant on the beach (when it was too dark to use the film camera I had with me). Thank you for reading!
PS I wrote all the poems in the lovely little book my daughter made me earlier in the summer. Normally I would feel a lot of pressure to be perfect in a handmade journal, but as she pointed out, she can make me others : D
