Scrittura Saturday Poetry Prompt: Medical Musings

Dad, Father’s Day 2021 | medium format film photo by author

The day his brain short circuited
she found him, body
in a state of unresponsive repose
denying stimuli
denying help
it took a team to bring him back
wires, tubes, masks, machines
weeks and weeks of work
on the body, retraining limbs
while his mind wandered
defying the carefully placed apparatus
denying the cataclysm
everything a state of disjointed
confusion

Now his days are a careful dance
of measured doses
prescriptive waiting
medical pilgrimages —
mainly for the body
since the brain, still on a walkabout
sea legs abandoned
doesn’t seem to mind much:
eats, drinks, rests, remains calm
coiled inside its own secret shell

the body, saved
the man, lost
