The sweetest patch of grey that ever lay
before the fire, or in the sunshine,
wherever warmth was found. With wanton splay
she’d claim a bed, be it wide or confined,
making comfort out of concrete, making
canned fish into a feast. Breaking silence
with snores and statements, an undertaking
we understood, heart to heart, so entranced
as we were by feline wiles, we gave in
to her requests; she let us pet her chest
and belly, with indulgence. Under chin
was her delight. She was the very best.
Tearfully we waved her across the bridge
with love for every moment that she lived.

Last week, we had to say goodbye to our dear sweet cat. She was 23 years old, so we can hardly say that we were shorted anything, but as any pet owner knows: no amount of years can ever be long enough! The grief is heavy; she is very much missed.

Thank you, readers! I have one more poem I’m going to share for her, tomorrow.
