Freeze

Winter Poems

Medium format film photo by author

silence rules the frozen day
no snow, no ice,
but the air shivers in vacant wonder
even the wind holds its breath
birds huddle in secret
squirrels make quick forays
that the cats watch
from cozy beds on the side
of the pane that defies winter

somewhere on the earth’s belly
summer looks into a pond
admiring her dewy beauty
thinking she will never age
to the haggard bareness
of the January frozen day

Hope everyone in the path of winter storms is weathering the season safely. Thank you for reading!
