Gifting season arrives
like an expected relative
with a cheery ring of the bell
the offerings form mountains
wrapped and presented or
delivered secretly St Nick style:
a subtraction of money
or time, a little bit of a day
a little bit of life
withdrawn from one account
on account of another

What seems like a minus sign
becomes a multiplication
the present transforms
into a banquet
a cosmic boomerang
the gift given
returns with all its cousins
piling on for a group hug
that lasts forever

I’m a little behind! This poem I wrote on the 6th, which is the Feast of St Nicholas. Thank you, readers!

I wrote a short story for St Nicholas a couple of years ago. Here it is if you’d like to check it out
