Spirit animals, raining fur

35mm film | photo by author (of the family cat)

Outside, morning, coffee waiting
local dogs drag owners by
Summer’s heat each day abating
seasons changing on the sly
The dog’s excitement makes him tremble,
sweet dog, whose life does not dissemble

Outside, morning, lazy dreaming
cats in pools of sunshine lie
Calm, collected, steeped in meaning
each day as sweet as cherry pie
The cat’s contentment inspires peace
dear cat, with fur as soft as fleece

Another poem about my cat? Why, yes. I wrote this sitting outside a local coffee shop, inspired by the parade of super excited doggos going by on their morning walks. When I see dogs, I think of my cat, and how my daughter has such a vehement preference of one over the other. To me, they’re like apples and oranges: no comparison, really, and I like both! Thank you for reading!
