in the place
of desert space
between my ears
population one
all my fears gather
for regular meetings
I take a beating
refined by the fire
where my self confidence
burns down
again and again

in the forest
a controlled burn
will spur on new growth
but whoever lights
these conflagrations
neglects their station
of dropping seeds behind
the blaze rages
wild, unchecked
until all the stages
have run their course

I return by force
picking through the ruins
bathed in ashes
until it passes

in an upper room
perched like blooms
of hope, the committee waits
a staff of the greats
myths and legends
who made the long climb
in the time before
online, before
self-publishing
opens its…
