Into the West Sonnet Series
Rocky evidence: time leaves a rough gash,
water torture wears away resistance
from the black stone. When it all comes to pass
what is left is beautiful persistence.
Deep, and abrupt, this fall through the layers
down to where the river still runs, distant
and sparkling as an old memory
